Marcus & Co. Diamond Butterfly Brooch/Pendant

An extraordinary survivor from the golden age of American jewelry. This magnificent diamond butterfly by Marcus & Co. captures the delicacy of nature in 18K gold and approximately 4.88 carats of Old European-cut diamonds. Beautifully articulated in white gold on the front with warm yellow gold on the reverse, the brooch also converts to a pendant with the removal of its pin mechanism.

What makes this butterfly truly extraordinary is the discovery of what appears to be its original design drawing in the Jaques & Marcus archives at Dartmouth College. After acquiring the brooch, I began researching its history and was delighted to find the butterfly among the firm's beautifully preserved drawings dating from 1890 to 1910. The design suggests that the brooch may have been a special commission, although the identity of its original owner remains a mystery. More than a century later, this remarkable jewel has retained its beauty, craftsmanship, and charm. A rare opportunity to own a piece of jewelry whose story can be traced back to the artist's drawing board.
